Spain expanded its colonial presence from the Philippines to Taiwan in the 17th century. The first encounters between the Spanish and the Minnanese people are still evident in the languages spoken and used by the island’s inhabitants today. This interactive exhibition invites you to navigate with De De the Digger, the cat with an archaeologist’s mind, through the festival and learn about these historical connections.

Vancouver TAIWANfest is grateful to be held on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish Nation), and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation). We acknowledge our privilege to be gathered here, and commit to work with and be respectful to the Indigenous peoples of this land while we engage in meaningful conversations of culture and reconciliation.
