The virtual tour video was created with local production company Thru the RedDoor, and it follows the guide, Lorrie Gallant, as she gives a tour of the former Mohawk Institute Indian Residential School. During the video Lorrie provides the history of the institution over its 140 year history. Viewers will get to see the different rooms in the school, from the girls’ and boys’ dormitories, the cafeteria, laundry room, and other rooms throughout the building, as well as hear interviews from five Survivors of the Mohawk Institute.

Janis Monture, Executive Director of the Woodland Cultural Centre, will be hosting this session and be available for a Q&A.

About The Artist

Janis Monture is from Six Nations of the Grand River, Mohawk Nation Turtle Clan.  Janis has recently returned as the Executive Director of the Woodland Cultural Centre.  Previously, Janis was appointed the Director of Tourism and Cultural Initiatives for the Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation.  Janis was a committee member for the Great Lakes Research Alliance for the Study of Aboriginal Arts and Cultures and for the Arts & Culture Advisory Council for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Para Pan American Games.   Currently Janis is the President of Kaha:wi Dance Theatre and Board Member for the Brant Community Foundation and Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation.

The Woodland Cultural Centre (WCC) is a First Nations Educational and Cultural Centre. Located on the grounds of the former Mohawk Institute residential school, the Centre was established in 1972 to protect, promote, interpret, and present the history, language, intellect and cultural heritage of the Anishinaabe and Ongwehon:weh. The Centre is a leader in the revitalization and celebration of Haudenosaunee culture, language, history, and art.
