Our Thoughts

Our Thoughts

All our experiences are vastly different, yet follow similar trajectories in our search for a sense of belonging. This year’s exhibitions shine a spotlight on stories that resonate with people across cultures.

Many people in Taiwan and in Canada are immigrants or descended from immigrants. Many others have mixed cultural backgrounds. Amidst this vibrant diversity, conflicts of self-identity and self-reconciliation arise. And art is what allows us to peer into the windows of each other’s past, and glimpse into our shared futures.

Last year, local musician Tom Su brought his friends and played music for us on the street. Through nostalgic lullabies, cultural folk songs, and familiar tunes, his story resonated with people of all ages and backgrounds.

Throughout the years, Taiwan Bookstore introduced us to different perspectives in the world of literature. With a focus on authors of mixed cultural backgrounds, or first and second generation immigrant authors, this year we explore the colourful lives that are born from the collision of cultures across time and space.

As a festival, we continue to be inspired by our attendees, artists, friends. Combining different forms of art, let’s continue to share more stories on our journey to BECOMING ME.

Vancouver TAIWANfest is grateful to be held on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish Nation), and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation). We acknowledge our privilege to be gathered here, and commit to work with and be respectful to the Indigenous peoples of this land while we engage in meaningful conversations of culture and reconciliation.
